Why the discrepancies with the billion apps number?

You might have noticed, depending on how you are viewing the count-up page, that the number is different.
There’s an interesting write-up on TechCrunch that tries to get to the bottom of it - and I think what I’m seeing in the comments is actually much more interesting than the original post.
